Tracing Dr. Kilisli Rifat: From Ottoman to Turk and Beyond
Published 2016
Nükhet Kardam grew up in Istanbul in the 1960s and 1970s and left Turkey to study international relations in Canada. As she continued to live and work abroad, her ties to Turkey grew stronger rather than weaker over the years. Thus, she embarked on a mysterious journey to explore her grandfather Dr. Kilisli Rıfat’s life. Her grandparents, Dr. Kilisli Rıfat, a well-known medical doctor, author, bureaucrat and professor, and his wife Nazire, the daughter of an Ottoman pasha, were subjects of the multicultural Ottoman Empire. Then they became Turks, 'citizens' of the Republic of Turkey. How did they adapt to becoming citizens of a unitary nation-state with a reconstructed history, national myths and identity? How did they survive the destruction of a vast empire, the wars, and the devastation? Kardam found out that we are links in a chain of generations, unconsciously affected by their suffering or unfinished business, until we acknowledge the past. And her search resulted in surprising discoveries that led to questioning her own identity.
Ottoman to Turk and Beyond: Shimmering Threads of Identity
Published 2016 Kindle Edition, with Co-Author Sarah Springer
Driven to face who I am as a Turkish-American woman, this journey began as an exploration of my paternal grandfather, Dr. Kilisli Rifat. I never met him but he gave me my name. As a successful, renowned doctor when the Ottoman Empire disappeared and the Republic of Turkey was born, Dr. Rifat and his family were caught in momentous changes. By following his complex story of redefined identities, adopted voluntarily or by force, I was led to reexamine the history of modern Turkey and definition of being a Turk. I uncovered that my family was not the Turkish family I thought it was, and my grandfather was harboring secrets I could not have imagined. Through writing I found myself on a parallel journey, encountering multiple identities of the culture and landscape I called home, and ultimately leading to a redefinition of who I am.
Turkey's Engagement with Global Women's Human Rights
Published 2017 1st Kindle Edition
Examining the rise of global women's human rights and their interpretation and application to Turkey, Nüket Kardam provides an in-depth study that applies global norms - including women's empowerment, overcoming violence against women, and gender and good governance - to a specific locale in order to examine events post application. The volume examines whether a gender equality regime exists and looks into the Turkish attempt at compliance. Moreover, it analyzes the tension between abstract universalism, Western enlightenment values, and local values and identities, including the role of Islam regarding women's rights. This groundbreaking study also includes research on the women's movement in Turkey, its discourses and its relationship with the state from the 1980s onwards, during which time multilateral and bilateral donors, and the European Union came to exert more influence, and new civil society partnerships were formed with the state.

Mystical Music in Sufi Cultures with Amir Etemadzadeh, February 2025
Course Description:
Sufism is the mystical dimension of Islam. It is, at the same time, a universal spiritual path. In this course, we will first introduce the overall philosophy and practice of Sufism. Our aim is to show how Sufism is a lived experience through music and movement in different cultures around the world. We will discuss and demonstrate the different types of music and instruments used in Sufi cultures. At times, we will present Sufi poetry and music together. Participants will find out how Sufi music has been integrated into everyday life as a vehicle for healing, spiritual elevation, contemplation, and community building and will have a chance to experience it themselves.
Rumi's Relevance for Today's World: February 2024
Course Description:
We have all heard of Rumi's lovely poems, yet this course is an opportunity to study and explore some of Rumi’s main spiritual teachings from the "Masnavi," which is considered to be his masterpiece and, by many, to be the greatest mystical Sufi text ever written. In order to get his profound messages across to his readers, Rumi used stories and anecdotes drawing from sacred history. As we journey through the "Masnavi," we'll be able to better understand and interpret what is going on in our world today, from both individual and societal perspectives.
Sufism: The Mystical Dimension of Islam: September 2019
Course Description:
Sufism, the mystical dimension of Islam, has many similarities with other spiritual traditions such as Buddhism, Taoism and mystical facets of Christianity and Judaism. There are practicing Sufis around the world who are not necessarily Muslims, as well as many people who have benefited from its teachings. As such, Sufism has a universal dimension. After reviewing the tenets of mainstream Islam and discussing how Sufism fits in, we will examine the roots of Sufism and its main principles and practices. We will also listen to Sufi music and read works by Sufi poets in order to understand it as a lived experience.
CREATIVITY WORKSHOPS
Aging Creatively
November 2019 Monterey California
Many of us have concentrated on a career, raised a family or have remained so busy that we have not had the time to access our own creativity and explore our latent talents. Research has shown that learning new things and discovering a talent engages the brain and promotes health and well-being. This workshops reflected on what creativity means to us individually through discussion, participatory activities, movement, storytelling and meditation.
Our work also expanded our perceptive abilities to ignite a renewed sense of wonder, apply several tools of creativity to identify potential areas/interests we may pursue and come up with a plan of action to sustain our creativity.
Similar workshops on Aging Creatively were held in Carmel, California, and Fethiye, Türkiye.

Cubic Wisdom, originally named The Rhyme&Rhythm Project, was launched in 2019 and is an ongoing project seeking to bring creativity and beauty through artistic collaboration -- locally and worldwide. The name (Cubic Wisdom) is inspired by a vision of the six faces of the cube, a metaphor for the heart, turning to face in all directions."Wherever you turn is the face of the Divine."
The mission is to support and perpetuate collaboration with like-minded artists in the field of poetry, music, dance, visual arts - and any other art form where the unique and the universal are in dynamic interplay.Created by Poet and Writer Nükhet Kardam and Musician and Teacher Amir Etemadzadeh, this "passion project" began when Nükhet wrote her first poem, inspired by a drum rhythm taught by her Daf instrument instructor Amir.Nükhet, being a scholar and author of three books prior to this project, found this new passion for creative expression enlivened through poetry. Together with Amir, she embarked on a creative journey of self-expression through music and words, exploring universal themes of life, love, and existence. This creative partnership bore "Journey to the Real", their first collaboration of poetry and music. Seeking to inspire new and unexpected journeys - both individual and collective - their creative work strives to illuminate the universal journey of the heart we all share, with an honesty and sincerity required for looking into the mirror at ourselves.Over time, "Journey to the Real" expanded to include a variety of media including video, audio and podcasts - where new artists, writers, and philosophers are brought into the mix.We seek to know ourselves.
You are invited to join this “seekers’ caravan”.In the future, Cubic Wisdom plans to offer live performances, creativity workshops with music, poetry and movement, and Sufi drumming and poetry circles.Interested in collaborating with us?
